Melbourne 1956 50 Years On
On Sunday 19th November 2006, Melbourne celebrated 50 years since it hosted the 1956 Olympic Games, with an opening ceremony style re-enactment at the MCG. Twenty athletes from Caulfield Little Athletics Club were lucky to be involved in the ceremony. Our athletes, decked out in matching t-shorts, shorts and caps, held placards with various country names on them. The kids walked onto the MCG, followed by the flag bearer of that country, and any athletes from those countries who were attending. It was a long day, which started with a rehearsal, lunch, getting the ‘uniform’ and then lining up before entering the ground. The Governor of Victoria commented that it was a wonderful touch it was to include so many children who were all so well behaved. The kids had a great time and were thankful to have had the opportunity to be involved in the ceremony, and meet some famous athletes, past and present.
